Redefining the traceability of Peruvian cacao from the source

In a global market that increasingly demands transparency, traceability has gone from being a differentiator to becoming a requirement. The data confirms it: according to the Market Growth Reports 2024, 62% of buyers expressed their willingness to pay more for chocolates with ethical or sustainability certifications. At Machu Picchu Foods, we are committed to being part of the solution.

In today’s dynamic and conscious industry, traceability resonates strongly. But what does it truly mean to have traceability that validates every step of your cacao’s journey, from seed to exquisite chocolate bar? It means guaranteeing a verifiable, ethical, and competitive supply chain.

Visibility from the field: the role of geo-literacy

Geo-literacy goes beyond the use of software. It’s about giving real visibility to the effort of every farmer. By accurately recording geolocated information about cacao from its origin, we ensure reliable data that supports the quality, certifications, and ethics behind every bean — attributes that international markets demand with increasing rigor.

We put this approach into practice through three key pillars that guide how we work in the field and with our partners:

  1. Building capacity in the field: We have trained our team and cooperative partners in the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) tools, enabling them to collect and manage geospatial information efficiently and replicably. Knowledge doesn’t stay in the classroom — it is applied directly where cacao grows.

  2. Real-time visualization with our Cocoa Map: All geolocated information is integrated into our “Cocoa Map” system, a dashboard that allows us to visualize the origin of our raw materials in real time. This tool supports strategic decision-making and ensures compliance with international deforestation-free standards, including the requirements of the European EUDR regulation.

  3. Integrating cooperatives into fieldwork: The active participation of cooperative leaders ensures that technological innovation is organically embedded into daily field operations, raising the value of production and strengthening trust throughout the entire chain.

Our impact in numbers

The change in the field is already tangible, and these figures show how it is taking hold across the entire chain.
  • 25 representatives from 8 partner cooperatives trained and ready to replicate this knowledge within their organizations.

  • 59 Machu Picchu Foods technical advisors certified in geolocation tools to provide first-level support in the field.
